Gentle Annie VK3/VT-078 activation

After my morning activation of Spion Kopje I headed around to Gentle Annie VK3/VT-078.

I have activated this summit back in 2013 and 2014.

The weather had warmed up and it was about 29 degrees in the sun. I have previously driven to the top of this summit but the track was in no condition for my RAV4 today so I had to walk it. It was a tough walk up as this is not a gentle hill, despite the name.

I made 13 QSOs all on 40m before heading back to the car for a cool drink.

VK3/VT-040 Spion Kopje activation

VK3/VT-040 Spion Kopje is one of my most visited summits. I have activated it in 2012, 2013, 2014 and today.

It was a sunny day and easy going up the ‘track’ from the road. The track is marked with blue marker tape for most of the way with many low trees requiring careful navigation of the squid pole on my backpack. The actual summit is a little beyond where many people stop.

I made 19 QSOs on 40m then shortened the ends of the 12 m section of my linked dipole and made four QSOs on 10m.

I also revisited the Geocache that is near by.

French Island National Park activation, VKFF-0622

Today I returned from my latest activation of French Island National Park. I’ve been over to the island before in January 2010 and January 2012 which were both before the introduction of the VKFF award program. The initial purpose of this visit was to activate the recently added VKFF-0950 French Island Marine National Park as part of the WWFF award program however I decided before leaving home that my bicycle is not up to the journey with full camping gear so I’ll return later for that park.

I arrived at Stony Point about 45 minutes before the ferry departure and snapped some photos of the local area.

Arriving at Tankerton Jetty at about 10:15 am I was at the Fairhaven Campsite around midday. I set up my tent and got on air about 1:20 pm local working 40m on and off until 8:00 pm. Working conditions were Yaesu FT817ND, linked dipole on 9m squid pole and VK port-a-log for logging.

Heading back in the morning to catch the first ferry I stopped briefly at one of the observation decks for a short activation on 40m working only one station.

Brief morning activation

Hiking briskly toward the jetty one of the locals told me the first ferry had been cancelled. I slowed the pace and patiently waited for the next ferry to take me back to my car.

A successful activation, albeit not as originally planned. I’ll have to come back better prepared for an assault on the French Island Marine National Park later in the year.

Activating Mt Bride VK3/VC-009, VK3/VC-011 Britannia Range and Kurth Kiln Regional Park VKFF-0971

Looking for some fun between Christmas and New Year I headed back to a couple of nearby summits Mt Bride VK3/VC-009 and VK3/VC-011 Britannia Range.

These summits are easy to access and the walk up each is not too taxing.

On Mt Bride I made 17 QSOs all on 40 m with Summit to Summit contacts with VK1DI and VK3TKK . Britannia Range provided 15 QSOs on 40m and one QSO on 10m with one Summit to Summit contact with VK3PF.

On the way home I stoppedĀ to activate the Kurth Kiln Regional Park VKFF-0971 for the WWFF award program. Here I made 51 QSOs including Park to Park contacts with VK5BJE/3, VK5HSX, VK3PF, VK5FGRY, VK5MTX and VK2YK.

VK port-a-log launched

After working on it off and on for the past 8 months I am pleased to have finally released VK port-a-log. VK port-a-log is an Android logging app for phones and tablets, primarily for logging contacts in the field.

It is compatible with the following radio award programs;

VK port-a-log provides compatible ADIF files for logging programs such as Log4OM as well as files for uploading to WWFF and SOTA databases.

VK port-a-log also receives spots from SOTAwatch and ParksnPeaks. Registered users of those sites can also post spots from VK port-a-log.

For more details, screenshots and info on getting VK port-a-log click here.
