Last weekend was the annual Scout & Guide Jamboree On The Air, or JOTA as it is often known. As I have done in the past I operated the VK3SCG JOTA station at Gilwell Park Scout Camp in Gembrook with the Scout Radio & Electronics Service Unit.
The JOTA Patrol Activity camp includes many activities such as Fox Hunting, Metal Detecting, Radio Orienteering, Mast Construction and Geocaching. There is a market fair on Saturday night where the scouts get to trade ‘JOTA dollars’ earned during the day.
The radio conditions on Saturday and Sunday were good and I was able to find Scouts stations for all but one group to talk with. As in previous years there was great interest by the scouts in my QSL card collection. I have two folders full of QSL cards in plastic pockets showing different places that I have contacted and this is quite interesting to the scouts.
I’ll be back again next year.
